World’s shortest endurance run

Today’s run (street): 2.5 miles

I woke up with my usual disbelief that I’d be outside running in the next fifteen minutes. Although I ran on Sunday, this was my return to the 4:00 AM darkness, where bad things can happen if you don’t pay proper attention. With my injuries healing, but still stinging, I got up, put on my running clothes and headed out the door.

Sunday’s workout wasn’t great, but it confirmed my ability to run. Two mornings later, I expected more, but I experienced tightness in my muscles and in the skin around my injuries. This discomfort forced me to adjust my stride a little and the result was sub-par, mechanical gait that prevented me from generating much speed. I focused on enduring the run, knowing above all else, that getting through a workout is preferable to skipping one.

At the end of my run, I approached my driveway carefully and managed to avoid the raised edge that tripped me up on Friday morning. I completed my usual route in a minute longer than normal and that gave me a 25 second per mile slower pace. Considering the circumstances, I’d call that a decent outcome.

Hurtin’ Hattori’s

Along with the damage to my Hattori’s toe box yesterday, that probably came as a result of so much downhill running during the race, I also managed to aggravate my right Achilles to the point of great discomfort. This injury has been a long time coming. I started to notice some pain at the back of that foot (just above the heel) some weeks ago, but it never became worse than an uncomfortable distraction. It wasn’t too bad after the race yesterday, but later in the day I felt some sharp pains as I walked around.

I don’t know why this problem developed. If it is the Hattori’s, I’d think the injury would have happened on both Achilles tendons. But running related injuries never seem to occur symmetrically. It could be a combination of the shoe and the way I run. I’ve been icing the area and taking Aleve since last night, and that combination has helped a lot.

I considered doing an easy run today, just to get outside, but I decided that might do more harm than good. A slow, easy recovery run wouldn’t help my conditioning and it would definitely put more strain on the Achilles. I’m probably going to do most of my running in the Mirages over the next two weeks to see if that helps the problem. I love the Hattori’s but they may be getting to the end of their usefulness. I have another pair of Hattori’s that I can start to use once my Achilles feels better. When I do, I’ll know to replace them soon after I reach 200 miles.

A different kind of labor pain

Happy Labor Day. I’m ambivalent about this holiday because it represents the end of summer vacation for my kids and the end of my vacation week. On the plus side, we are edging closer to fall (my favorite season) when temperatures and humidity both drop. Running in cool fall weather, with the leaves underfoot and the ubiquitous scent of maple from the trees, is about as good as it gets.

I won’t be running today. I considered it earlier in the day, before I experienced a sudden tsunami of pain in my lower back while placing some glasses in the dishwasher. This pain came on alarmingly fast and it felt serious. I have not suffered lower back pain in decades and that problem was solved when I replaced my sleep sofa with a real bed.

These really work

My first reaction was to lie on my back while my daughter quickly brought over two ice packs and a towel to place under my lower spine. After ten minutes I was able to perform a couple of hamstring stretches that loosened me up enough to stand.  I walked to the kitchen and took two Aleve. After an hour the pain had dissipated enough to assure me that this was not going to be a major problem.

Suspect #4

I don’t know if was the 25% more running miles that I covered this week, backyard soccer played two days earlier or yesterday’s obstacle course, but my back had clearly had enough. I’ve also been using a Brookstone Fitness Stick that is probably putting strain on little used muscles in my lower back.

So no workout today, although I may do some core stretching later if my recovery continues. I think I’ll celebrate the rest of Labor Day by avoiding any further labor!

Pain and loathing at 4:00 AM

Today’s run (street): 2.5 miles

I ran so poorly this morning that I almost regretted the workout. My first steps onto the street signaled that I was due for a sub-par run and, after a couple of minutes, I considered turning back. I decided to just go with it and ran my usual distance, but not my usual route. I ran so slow that it took me almost two minutes longer than normal to complete the course.

I can’t explain why my legs lacked energy today. I know that bad runs surface every once in a while but I am disappointed with my performance. I experienced some intermittent sharp pains on the medial side of my left shin that concerned me as I ran. I also felt pain at the top of my right hamstring. This has been a chronic source of low level pain for a while, but usually only when sitting.

I might have been better off resting today but I don’t think I did any harm by struggling through today’s workout. Well, no physical harm at least.

2011 Running Goals

Here it is, January 17th, and though I’ve already identified my business goals I still haven’t published this year’s running goals.  The following items represent my hopes for this year:

1. Run a half marathon

This challenge would have seemed completely out of reach when I restarted running in 2008 but now it feels like a logical and viable step. I don’t have a half marathon identified but I’m likely to run the one during the RXR LI Festival of Races because the timing works and it’s conveniently located.

2. Score settling

Run my best times ever on the Dirty Sock and Cow Harbor 10K’s. Beat my time in the New Hyde Park 8K (44:42 two years in a row!).

3. Running tourism

Run outside of Long Island at least six times. Bonus for competing in a race outside of LI. 

4. Hit those trails

Add Caleb Smith, Sunken Meadow and one more state park to my trail running experience.

5. Performance

Run 1 mile under 7:50/mile or 2 miles under 8:00/mile.

                                                                                         

Today’s run (street): 5.3 miles

Today is Martin Luther King Day that caps off a very nice long weekend of running. I was again constrained to my neighborhood so I tried to minimize the boredom by changing my route a little. My plan was to run an out-and-back course where I’d go for 25 minutes and then turn around and follow the route back home. Once again I had good energy and was cruising along when I felt a slight pain in my knee at almost the same moment that I was thinking how I never get knee pain. The pain increased and I worried something happened. I was starting to hobble and realized that I was at least two miles from home.

Since I’d done nothing to cause this sudden problem (except to think about knee pain!) I decided that it was likely that it would disappear just as quickly as it came. Every once in while I’ll feel a sharp pain in my ankle when I walk and I just work it out with a few steps. This knee pain seemed to be the same sort of thing and after slowing down a little, the pain passed and didn’t return.

Once the phantom injury was over I re-focused on my route but had gone a little off my planned course that made the out-and-back distances asymmetrical. I ended up adding some extra loops to ensure I surpassed 5 miles and I ended up with another third of a mile as a bonus. I’m hoping to get a chance to run while I’m traveling this week but my schedule is tight. I did cover almost 15 miles over the long weekend and I like the way I’m running right now. Maybe I’ll have a chance to return to the trails next weekend. Hope so.

Anniversary day run and 700th post

Today’s run (street): 3.55 miles

Today is my anniversary so I took a vacation day and spent some great time with my wife. It’s also the 700th post on this blog. I wanted to get a few extra miles in this morning because I skipped Tuesday’s workout. With a little more time to run I had more opportunity to cover distance than I usually do on during the work week. This morning’s run was very tough. It felt harder than an 8 miler in the July heat. I’m hoping that my experience had something to do with this cold that continues to plague me. I want to avoid the need to call this blog the Emerging Complainer so I’ll just say that my legs felt like lead and my form felt unbalanced over the entire run.

I wore my Brooks GTS 10’s because I wanted a little extra cushioning since everything that can hurt was hurting prior to hitting the road. It was a strange sensation when I ran. I felt that my stride action was numb and that my glutes on the right side (where I usually have an issue) felt extremely weak. I always vow to resume my core workouts when I experience these feelings but I haven’t been good about doing that. I don’t exactly why I’m having so many sluggish runs these days. You’d think the fact that I run most days would contribute more to continuous improvement. I know things will snap back into place once I get rid of this cold. Despite the difficulty of today’s run I beat yesterday’s pace handily so I know I can move along if I need to.  I’m not sure what I’ll do tomorrow for an activity because I am home on Friday and that will provide time for a longer workout. I’m hoping for less pain and more gain. I’ll be happy with less pain (I couldn’t resist one last complaint).

Morning pity party

Today’s run (street): 2.25 miles

I don’t often skip two days in a row but I’ve been fighting a cold all week. I usually run well after resting two days but this morning’s workout was taxing. I’m thankful that my cold it isn’t any worse than it is. This time of year whenever I  feel run down I worry that I have the flu. You’d think I’d get a flu shot. When I got up my legs were hurting in unfamiliar ways and I attributed it to cold induced body aches rather than running. My pains ranged from my ankles to my upper hamstring and included shin and knee pain. Since I hadn’t run in two days I wasn’t concerned that the pain was related.

Today’s rain was just starting when I stepped out and for the first half of my run it remained a drizzle. It was far warmer than when I went out on Sunday but not too uncomfortable. Strong winds were blowing from the south as I headed out the door. My leg pain dissipated as I ran but my legs still felt heavy and my pace was ponderous. I was glad to be back on the road but I wasn’t really enjoying the experience. It felt like I was running with ankle weights. The rain picked up substantially after ten minutes and running into stiff winds didn’t help. I was anxious to get through the run so I could relax with a cup of coffee before I hit the shower. My overall pace was abysmal but I did succeed in logging my first miles of the week. My head cold remains but I don’t think running did me any harm. I’m hoping that tomorrow’s workout will be a better experience.

Shoe tie, don’t bother me

Last December I poked a little fun at Runner’s World for running this tease on their cover. I shouldn’t have been so quick to judge because I had an un-tying incident during this morning’s run that was distracting and potentially dangerous. Although I love early morning running there are some issues with the darkness on moon-less nights. My headlamp,  a Petzl Tikka Plus, does a good enough job but it doesn’t really throw very far. My concern is that someday I’ll miss seeing a rut in the road or the sidewalk and I’ll turn an ankle (or worse). 

 
The Tikka Plus does have a ratcheting swivel head that allows the user to aim the light but I find that I often need to put my head down in dark areas to properly see the road. The combination of a dark morning and the unraveling of my shoelace put me a little on edge. This is what passes for drama at 4:15 AM! I was reluctant to stop in the middle of a run to tie my laces so once I established that my shoe wasn’t slipping I decided to just bear it the rest of the way. The resulting distance was covered without incident but I was more concerned than usual that I’d trip on my un-tethered laces. Except for the constant whipping from the loose pair against my shin the rest of the run went without incident.
 
The key reason my laces became untied had to do with a recent problem I’m having with my Brooks GTS 9’s. The top of the laces are positioned exactly where my tibia meets the upper tarsal and there are two large nerves that run through there. When I tie my laces too tight it pinches and hurts. I’ve always had this issue with these shoes although the severity of the pinching can vary. This morning I must have tied them too loosely. I don’t have this issue with my other four pairs of running shoes so it may be connected to the design of the Brooks. I have a different pinching issue with my office pair of Asics 1130’s so I wonder if it’s the design of my foot and not the shoes. Either way, when I look for my next pair of everyday trainers, tongue and collar comfort will be an important criteria.

Trail running as painkiller

As I prepared for this morning’s elliptical workout I thought about all the mileage I’d put in over my vacation. I also thought about how it may have contributed to my nagging leg pain that started earlier this year. I’m still unsure of the cause of this pain, it may be a hamstring pull or something else entirely. I’ve thought numerous times about making an appointment with an orthopedist to figure it out. In the mean time it’s probably a good idea to do more cross training to rest whatever gets aggravated when I run.

I checked my workout list before I stepped up on the elliptical machine and saw that I hadn’t logged a session on it since June 11. I’ve taken every opportunity to run outdoors over the last few weeks and my early morning headlamp runs have contributed to that. I thought that an elliptical session this morning would be a nice way to use different muscles that could help strengthen my leg and lessen the pain. I then realized, for the first time in memory, that I had no pain. I was understandably happy but that made no sense to me. I ran a tough 4+ miles yesterday on the trails to top off a record mileage week. I should be hurting more, not less.

Perhaps it was the trails that made a difference. The softer surface absorbs the impact differently than running on pavement. If that’s the case I wonder if I should be considering an even more cushioned shoe than the Brooks. The Asics are comfortable and it’s my understanding that they represent the high end of the cushioning scale. Hard to know if it’s a coincidence but I will plan more weekend runs at Bethpage and Stillwell if that’s the case. Reminder to self: buy a compass.

Powering through

My head cold continues and yesterday afternoon I paid a visit to my company’s medical department. The doctor, who I’ve known for years, said “Sorry, but I don’t have a cure for the common cold.” I told him it wasn’t the cold that was bothering me, I actually wanted his take on my running injury. He had me lie on the table and tried to isolate the problem but it was inconclusive. He didn’t understand why the pain was intermittent and why the discomfort went away after I walked or ran on it. He then suggested that I see an orthopedist and though he warned me not to overdo it he didn’t tell me to stop running.

This morning I was determined to run and, despite some sneezing and coughing I got on the treadmill for what I’d accepted to be a low impact run. Once I got moving my leg started feeling better so I turned up the speed. I ended up running 1.75 miles at a 9:05 pace although the last two thirds were probably faster since I’d run the first six minutes at about 9:50/mile. Since the run I feel pretty much okay. It wasn’t a long run today but I needed to show my cold who’s in charge.
