Today’s workout (elliptical): 25 minutes

Yesterday morning I noticed a sign that my company was conducting a blood drive with the New York Blood Center. I had about 30 minutes before my next meeting so I headed to the location. After filling out the paperwork, answering screening questions and getting my finger pricked (to check my iron level) I was ushered over to a well-used, industrial quality chaise lounge. There was a large digital clock that showed I only had 12 minutes to give my pint and get back upstairs to attend my meeting. I finished with only minutes to spare and they were concerned that I was rushing off without the juice and cookies chaser they insist is necessary for recovery. I made it back in time having taken a small bottle of water and some Chex mix to go.

I felt the effects from my blood donation this morning while on the elliptical. I couldn’t manage my usual level of resistance. In fact, the whole session seemed harder than normal. I figured that if I held the same speed that I usually maintain it would probably be an equivalent workout, even at the lower level. I rarely watch the clock while on the elliptical because I have distractions like the morning news but I was happy when I reached my planned end time. My weekly cross training workout was well-timed. I wouldn’t have wanted to run feeling as I did this morning. There’s a big storm headed this way, possibly bringing snow on Friday (April Fools!) so I’ll likely be on the treadmill. Hopefully by then I will be at full strength for that harder workout.

If I designed elliptical machines

Today’s workout (elliptical): 25 minutes

The latest issue of Running Times came yesterday and my wife told me I’d be excited to see it. One of the main articles was a review of minimalist running shoes that (curiously) included the Karhu Fast 2’s. I’m behind on reading my running magazines but I think this issue may jump to the front of the line. If nothing else, I’m interested in how Running Times views this Karhu model whose high ride seems anything but minimal to me.

The rain from yesterday has headed east but I decided to stay indoors today and cross train on the elliptical. As I went through my workout I thought about a better way to design the machine so that resistance from the upper body poles could be set independently of the lower body setting. The only way to get a decent upper body workout on my machine is to set resistance over 100 watts which means the entire workout feels like you are going uphill while wearing ankle weights. Of course, many would say that a high level of effort is exactly the point of the machine. This may be true but at 4:00 AM all I want is a reasonable cardio workout with some whole body benefit. Listen up elliptical machine manufacturers!

Today’s workout (elliptical) 25 minutes

After resting on Wednesday I was eager to get back to my routine. Predictions of rain in the morning prompted me to prepare for an elliptical session last night. Indoor activities are occasionally welcomed because they involve less gear and give me more time to work out. Today’s elliptical workout was pretty straightforward. I always aim to do 25 minutes and the end result is typically the same: I’m happy that I worked out but not entirely satisfied that I worked as hard as I would on a run. But in the end I’m usually soaked with sweat and the muscles that most need help – hamstrings and glutes – are humming.

We’re going to get soaked today and the rain should carry over to mid-day tomorrow so I’ll likely find myself on the treadmill Friday morning. That’s fine. I want to do at least one good base building run over the weekend and I’m also thinking how fun it might be to return to the Muttontown Preserve in milder weather. Knowing some of the mysteries of the Mystery Trail, I could be in for another great adventure. But hopefully this time I won’t need to scale any fences.

Today’s workout (elliptical): 45 minutes

The rain was plentiful this morning and it has washed away much of the snow on our lawn. There are still some areas that haven’t seen sunlight since mid-December but it’s good to see some green again. I’ve done daily workouts since last Friday but haven’t felt like I’ve done much to build the stamina I’ll need for my upcoming half marathon. I took some inspiration from my wife, who runs 45 to 60 minutes daily, and spent 45 minutes on the elliptical machine while she did her treadmill workout. I used mid level resistance for the first 30 minutes and then stepped up the difficulty for the final 15. Even with that extra challenge, today’s workout still felt easier than my prior two runs.

I am training for a half marathon but I don’t know which one to choose. Unless I’m willing to travel a little my choices are limited. Each has its pluses and minuses:

1. Suffolk County Half Marathon – March 27

Plus – Small event, less than 500 runners
Minuses – Perhaps too small, only one month left to train


2. 13.1 Marathon – April 2
Pluses – Opportunity to participate in NYRR race, cool Craft race shirt
Minuses – Course looks like a lab maze, $80 entry fee

3. RXR Long Island Half Marathon – May 2

Plus – Local and convenient
Minus – Course does not look that interesting


4. Brooklyn Half Marathon – May 30

Pluses – NYRR race, Prospect Park and Coney Island usually bookend the course
Minuses – Date not good for Team Emerging Runner, course details have not been set


5. Hampton’s Half Marathon – Sept 24

Pluses – Later in the year, more time to train, course has ocean views
Minuses – $70 entry fee, is held just a week after Great Cow Harbor 10k

 I’m hoping to decide soon which race to run. There’s also the Queen’s Half Marathon which is a possibility but July may be too hot for me for a race of that distance. There’s also the Great South Bay Half in Islip but the course looks too circuitous for my taste.  I’m hoping my friend Brian will join me on my first half marathon. Perhaps he has a preference that will help my decision.

The end of a long strange week

Today’s workout (elliptical): 25 minutes

This has been a strange, long week. I felt ill on Wednesday morning but managed to power through a run. That may have been a mistake. Wednesday was an all day industry meeting that I co-facilitated. From the beginning of the day to the end I suffered a pounding headache and by the time I got home I was ready for bed. Thursday morning I felt just as bad so I stayed home. No workout yesterday, just a lot of sleep.

This morning was far more pleasant and while I still woke up with a slight headache I felt much better overall. I thought a run, even an easy one, might be too much too soon so I settled in with the elliptical for a lower impact workout. That was a great decision that put me back into workout mode and built a good sweat. I finished up strong and energized. The temperatures have risen through this week and should continue to rise throughout the day. I’m wondering if I’ll even be able to hit the trails over the weekend. That would be a great end to a difficult week.

5 degree weather is cramping my style

It’s extraordinarily cold today. The display in my car showed 27 degrees in my garage and by the time I reached the train station, seven minutes later, it said 5. I usually rest on Mondays so I didn’t have to suffer through a treadmill session this morning. My threshold for morning runs is about 14 degrees. After that it’s the treadmill or elliptical machine.

It’s been a tough winter for running. We’ve already had more snow in December and January than what we usually average for the entire season. I like snow but it reduces my choices for running venues. I won’t be running any wooded trails for a while and I’m sure that the Bethpage bike trail is snowy and icy right now. My choices are either indoor running or around my local neighborhood. Make that a subset of local streets because the snow and ice has limited access to some key cross points. More snow is coming this week which will exacerbate the problem but at least the temperatures should rise. It looks like I may be doing much of my race training indoors unless we see a big thaw soon.

Anticipating my return to the road

Today’s workout (elliptical): 25 minutes

Despite all the snow shoveling from yesterday’s storm I felt remarkably free of any aches or pains this morning. I decided to use the elliptical machine today instead of the treadmill and I’m happy that I did. The elliptical provides a decent workout and with impact to the knees and hips it’s nice alternative to a run. Plus it’s quiet and human powered so I can zone out and not fear that the machine will punish my lack of focus the way the treadmill might.

It’s cold this morning and that will continue through tomorrow. I’m resigned to a treadmill workout in Friday and though I don’t really like the experience I like the convenience of starting my run so quickly after I get up. Unlike outdoor running that requires lots of layers, reflective vest, headlamp, etc., I throw on shorts, shoes and a shirt and I’m running. I’m hoping to catch a break on the weekend that will allow me to safely run outdoors on Saturday. The cold dry air, snow covered lawns and early winter sunrise make for a satisfying experience. Can’t wait to get back outdoors.

Karhu take two: a better experience indoors

It’s still early in the vacation — more days to go then have passed. We got out today for the first time since the snowstorm hit and had a great afternoon. This morning I took the time to clean out my running area in the guest room. This involved getting rid of a number of items that had been taking up space in an armoire that serves as the repository for my running gear. This cabinet also contains a large collection of technology supplies that I keep on hand in support of our network and computers. I got rid of many obsolete cables and peripherals and reduced my running shoe collection by targeting my ASICS 1130’s for donation. I was able to recover enough space to organize my running shirts, shorts, cold weather gear and socks into different drawers. A much needed exercise completed.

Exercise came in all forms today, before we all headed out I spent close to an hour on an indoor workout, first on the treadmill and then on the elliptical. I wore the Karhu Fast 2’s because I wanted to try them under different conditions. I had found the Karhu’s to be stiff and in conflict with my form when I wore them for a street run last Friday. Today they felt better and I don’t know why. Perhaps it was the treadmill surface versus running on pavement. It may be that I wasn’t physically up for the run on Friday and I assumed it was the shoes. On the treadmill the stiffness did not seem noticeable and the shoes seemed to move far better with my foot than they did last time. I focused on landing on my forefoot and the Karhu’s didn’t impede my form in any way.

I followed the treadmill run with 25 minutes on the elliptical and by the time I finished I felt the way I do after eight miles running on the road. I’m not sure what I’ll do tomorrow for a workout. The thought of another treadmill session is unappealing but with all the snow the roads are narrow and the sidewalks are buried. Hopefully we’ll see the temperatures rise enough to make the streets runnable. I’m not counting on that, but it would be nice.

Given a choice, I’ll take the elliptical

Today’s workout (elliptical): 25 minutes

The weather has not been ideal for outdoor activities. On Sunday I ran indoors because of the pouring rain and high winds. Last night they were predicting morning temperatures in the teens so I laid out indoor workout clothes. I figured that I’d decide whether to run on the treadmill or use the elliptical when I got up. When I went down for my coffee this morning I opened the shade and saw that the neighborhood was blanketed in snow. Good call on an indoor workout last night.

Not surprisingly, I chose the elliptical this morning instead of the treadmill. Sunday’s 30 minutes of unhappiness made it an easy decision. The session went by in a flash and I couldn’t believe it when I looked at the display and saw I’d passed the 20 minute mark. I stepped it up for the last five minutes and finished hot, sweaty and satisfied that I worked as hard as I would have on the treadmill. It’s supposed to be frigid through tomorrow morning so if the roads are icy on Wednesday I guess I’ll need to face the treadmill once again. Fingers crossed for a heat wave.

Back on the X1

Today’s workout (elliptical): 26 minutes

Despite my bravado about running in the coldest weather I couldn’t face the below 20 degree wind chills this morning. It’s been at least two weeks since my last elliptical session so I decided to defy convention and use the machine on a scheduled running day. I always go into these sessions thinking I’m due for an easier workout than I’d experienced with an equivalently timed run. By the end I felt like the elliptical matches or even surpasses any run that I do at a moderate pace. The elliptical was a nice change from running and I appreciated a few moments when I listened to music while I worked out, free of any ear buds and free to close my eyes without disastrous results. I’ll brave the cold tomorrow for a run and gear up accordingly. I’m hopeful that it will be less windy on Wednesday. Today the elliptical provided just the right workout, all things considered.
