Tough trails on the northern route

Thursday’s run (Stillwell Woods): 3.4 miles

Yesterday brought good news on a few fronts. First, my headache finally went away. Second, I made some good business progress during the day (although it interfered with my ability to generate a Thursday post). And third, I had a great run with my friend Chris at Stillwell Woods.

I’m definitely a morning runner, so the idea of going for a high energy run at 4 PM concerned me. The weather had looked threatening all day and thunderstorms were predicted for later. When Chris arrived, we decided to head to Stillwell rather than Bethpage, because Stillwell is closer and has excellent tree cover. I was glad to be going to Stillwell and happy to show off the trail running paradise that’s located five minutes from my house.

Before we headed over to Stillwell, Chris gave me another good piece of news. He’s going to be running Cow Harbor this year for the first time. Chris lives in Westchester and does races up there, but he’s never raced on LI. I filled him in on the Cow Harbor experience and he’s excited. He’s not intimidated by the James Street hill either. But I won’t be running alongside him that day. Chris runs the NY Marathon faster than 3:30 and will probably finish Cow Harbor ten minutes before I do.

But on the trails I can can keep up with him, at least for a while. We followed my usual route until peeling off onto the “Most Difficult” trail. Chris was amazed to see such tough terrain and said that if he lived here, he’d run Stillwell every day. We stayed on this steeply climbing and dropping trail until I redirected us back to my usual, but less challenging loop.

With Chris pacing, I was able to run faster than I probably would have gone if I was running alone. We did an extended loop and then another smaller loop before we reached the main trail. Just as I was feeling relived to be close to the end, Chris innocently asked, “Do you want to go around again?” I answered, “I’m done, race you to the car!”

Although yesterday was mostly good news, I was disappointed to hear that my friend Mike won’t be able to run the Dirty Sock course with me on Saturday because he’s been delayed traveling back to LI. I’m debating whether to run it alone, or go over to Bethpage and run the wooded trails there. It’s always helpful to practice on the course that you are racing, but I might get some extra hill work done if I go to Bethpage.

A running first: Bethpage Park to home

Today’s run (Greenbelt Trail): 6.6 miles

Ever since my first run on the Bethpage bike trail five years ago, I’ve always envied those who lived near the path. How great would it be to run across the street or through your backyard onto a protected trail that runs from Bethpage State Park to the start of the Massepequa Preserve? Pretty great I thought. I knew of the Greenbelt trail north of Bethpage that runs in various forms all the way to Cold Spring Harbor. But up until recently, that was mostly dirt paths with separations between sections.

Now that the Greenbelt has been paved all the way to Woodbury Road, I’ve been running parts of it from the north and other parts from the south, starting at Bethpage State Park. My dream of running from my house to Bethpage was getting closer to reality, but I had never run the full distance. That is, until today.

My friend KWL is a great runner and triathlete who finishes half marathons in 100 minutes and rides Gran Fondos, sometimes within days of each other. He and I have done many runs together, and once we mountain biked at Stillwell and followed that with a long trail run. KWL loves hills, and though I don’t, I couldn’t help suggesting that we run the full length of the northern Greenbelt from Bethpage to my house.

This morning we drove to Bethpage and parked my car in the lot before getting on the bike trail north. We kept a moderate pace, because it was hot, humid and we knew there would be hills. To his credit, KWL never complained about running so easy. I tried to make a case for the benefits of LSD and he accepted it. KWL is participating in a Ragner Relay at the end of the week. This race is the first Ragner staged in Canada and it goes from Cobourg to Niagara Ontario, A total of 192 miles. Each team has 12 runners who run three legs each.

A few years ago, Adventure Girl captained a Ragner team that ran the Woodstock to Bronx course and I remember the details, logistics and team management that went into that. Not to mention the fact that everyone ran about 20 miles, throughout the day and night. KWL won’t need to worry about all of that, but he’ll be doing all that running.

Our run today took us past the spot where I’d previously turned back toward Bethpage. There was almost another mile of running before we would reach my southern turnaround point from last Saturday. I was excited to have traveled every foot of the paved Greenbelt, but I also knew we were now at the foot of the first of three sizable hills.

With nothing to do but face the challenge, we made our way either uphill or down for the next three miles. By this time the heat and the hills were starting to get to me, but I wasn’t looking for an excuse to stop. Once we’d passed the third hill I knew it was mostly down or flat the rest of the way. We reached Woodbury Road, the end of the line. Not for our run, but it was the end of the paved bike trail.

We proceeded to cross the street and run through the local neighborhood before exiting at the middle school and making our way to my driveway.  According to Garmin, we’d covered 6.6 miles with a total elevation gain of 440 feet. It sure felt higher than that. We cooled off and drove back to Bethpage to get my car. Along the way, we noted the ground we were covering and the fact that we’d just ran that entire distance.

I’m looking forward a shorter and (hopefully) easier run tomorrow. I finally got the chance to run all the way home from Bethpage, and I was fortunate to do it with great company.

DST run with KWL at BSP*

Today’s run (Bethpage State Park): 6.25 miles

Daylight Savings Time (DST) starts today and (for this one) we “Spring” forward. I wasn’t thinking about that yesterday when I committed to a 7:00 AM run with a friend. In DST world, 7:00 AM is really 6:00 AM. By the time I got to bed, it was almost DST midnight. I somehow miscalculated all that and got up at 4:50 DST. So I ended up getting less than five hours of sleep.

My friend KWL arrived a little before 7:00. It was still dark when we headed over to Bethpage but it had lightened up in the ten minutes it took to get there. As I feared, the gates were up at the park so we quickly headed to Haypath Road. We were able to park the car in a spot that was adjacent to the Greenbelt trail head. This southern entrance put us on the newly paved section of the Bethpage bike path.

KWL and I started our run in 30° temperatures. We’d both dressed for the cold so we were comfortable as we made our way through the first mile. Our plan was to cover 10K easy, but easy is a relative term. KWL is a triathlete, accomplished cyclist and 1:40 half marathoner, so his “easy” pace is somewhat challenging to me. We happily compromised and settled into pace that worked for both of us.

The new section has some hills which I tackled easily, using my early run freshness to power through.  KWL loves inclines and I don’t. On the other hand, he dislikes running downhill and I can do that all day. So in the rare times when I held the forward position, it was usually on a downward slope.

Along way we encountered a group running in brightly colored outfits. Both times we saw them they were about to run up a hill as we were running down. They were a cheerful, talkative bunch, undaunted by the challenge. KWL and I reached the 3.1 mile mark and immediately turned around to complete the out and back route. I was feeling a little tired at that point and wasn’t looking forward to scaling the upcoming hills.

A few minutes after we’d met that challenge, I began to feel stronger. We picked up the pace with about 2K left to go. I’d thought that the trail extension would be easy, since (this time) we’d be on the better side of the hills. I’d forgotten that there were still some inclines going north. Before long, my Garmin chirped for 6 miles and we picked up the pace as we completed final quarter mile.

KWL and I both found the run exhilarating. Despite the DST change, we still had plenty of morning left. Today’s experience reminded me how enjoyable it can be to run with company. I really should do that more often. Perhaps it’s time to do something about joining a running club.

Preparing to run the Snowflake

Even though I’ve been away from the office since Thursday, this has probably been the busiest week I’ve had this year. I’m not complaining, but my plans to run today needed to be postponed. I was planning to go into the office tomorrow, but that’s also going to have to wait a day.

I may head to Bethpage on Tuesday morning to enjoy the peaceful experience of running without the weekend crowds. I am definitely in the mood to take on some hills and push the pace. Even though the Snowflake Race will happen on the pancake-flat streets on Long Beach, I’ve found hill training to be a great way to improve my speed.

My friend Steve, who has run this race with me the last two years, won’t be able to join me this year. He has two reasons, one good and one bad: paternity leave (good), knee injury (bad). I’m anticipating a very cold morning on race day and a very big crowd at the starting line. I have done pretty well at this race and, last year, I achieved a 4 mile PR. I don’t know about this year, but I plan to be competitive. I may be busy, but not too busy to get out and start training tomorrow.

Today’s run (Hook Mountain State Park trail): 6.1 miles

The weather report called for thunderstorms today, but we kept our plans to meet friends for activities around Hook Mountain State Park. Happily, the storms didn’t materialize, but the humidity certainly did.

We arrived at our friends home in Nyack around 9:00 AM and then headed over to the park. My wife and kids charted a hike on the blue-green trail while me and my friend Chris drove over to the trail at Nyack Beach. This trail runs along the Hudson River and provides a rolling route. According to my Garmin, we experienced 509 feet of elevation gain (and the equivalent loss since we ran it out and back).

We started our run at a brisk pace. The breezes off the water prevented us from feeling the humidity and it wasn’t until the path moved inland that I noticed how muggy it was. We moved well considering the heat and moisture, but the constantly changing elevation sapped some of my energy. After a couple of  hills that rivaled James Street in Northport, my sweat level moved to “extreme.”

Despite all that, I didn’t want the run to end. The scenery was beautiful and the conversation was great. I didn’t dread the frequent hills as much as I do at Bethpage. In fact, I had more problem on the steep downhills than on all but the toughest climbs. We made the turnaround after reaching the three mile point, despite Chris’s suggestion that we go another half mile.

The second half of the run went by quickly. Before long, we were back to where we’d started. I had the same light-headed reaction to the heat and dehydration that I usually have after the Dirty Sock 10K. That meant I needed lots of hydration and electrolytes and Chris gave me a banana and a water bottle. That helped, as did the cooling breezes coming off the river.

After a quick shower, back at the house, we went into town to meet our wives and the kids for lunch. Pizza, followed by home made ice cream, was the perfect restorative. After 6 tough miles on the trail, I had no guilt whatsoever!

Staying the course on Sunday

There’s less than 20 hours left until tomorrow’s race. The only things left to do are to pick up my race number at the Expo and then prepare my gear. Actually, there’s a lot of detail to that part. If the weather follows current predictions, we will have great conditions at the start of the race. In that case, I’ve identified which shirt, shorts and shoes (Kinvara 3’s) I’ll use. Along with that are many other tasks (filling my gel flask, charging my Garmin, SPIbelt items, sunglasses, warm up clothes, gear bag, etc) that must be completed.

Last year I made a list that came in very handy in the morning, because I was able to quickly verify that I had everything I needed before I left. I’ll do the same this year. I’m still undecided if I’ll start the race with bottled water that I can throw in the trash when I’m done with it. Water stations serve that purpose so I’ll likely just use them instead.

Yesterday I went over the race course with a colleague, BL, who is running the LI Half for the first time (his first half marathon in fact). He’s only been running for a year but he’s made great progress and puts in the hard work to train. BL frequently races and that will yield benefits for him tomorrow.

Another colleague, TC, will be coming by my house around 6:00 AM tomorrow and we’ll head to the race together. TC ran a 1:55 half marathon on a tough course two weeks ago and he is planning to run the Brooklyn Half next weekend. I’ll see him at the start but I’m guessing he’ll beat me to the finish line.

The Emerging Running Club

I’m planning to run in Central Park this afternoon with Steve, my banker friend. There’s something nice about ending the work week with a NYC run, especially on a cool fall day. Steve and I haven’t run together in a while so it will be good to catch up. I’ve been running more with friends these days and I really like the experience. It’s the variables that make it interesting. Last year I ran primarily with Adventure Girl and that set the bar high. We covered a lot of territory around NYC and ran with performance in mind. It was always a fun challenge keeping her pace.

When I run with my friend CK in the city I know it will be a workout that pushes me well past my comfort zone. Yet I still enjoy the experience. My runs with BJS and Dave are not “all out” although we do run hard. It’s a great balance between work and social and I learn a lot from both of them. My weekly runs with JQ are a treat. He’s a fascinating guy, the kind of person you’d pay to listen to. Our runs are relaxed and it’s as much about the conversation as it is about the activity. I’ve had some great runs recently with KWL who took up the sport when I co-organized a Fun Run last summer. He’s primarily a cyclist but he’s surpassed me in terms of speed. I had enjoyed an advantage on longer distances but he recently ran a 10K race on a Saturday and a Century (100 Mile) bike ride the next day. We usually run 8:30-8:40 miles but they don’t seem that hard. In most cases, running with a friend makes time go by faster. Hard runs just seem easier. It’s all about the company.
